SHUNA (Scotland) 1949 KGVI Local (Only two stamps ever issued) Situated at Arduaine, Oban, off the coast of Argyllshire, Scotland. Used as a holiday resort during the summer months, it's normal winter population comprises some five to ten inhabitants, increasing during the summer months, whilst visiting yachts also add to the number. Design of the first issue shows the islet with it's area names in Gaelic, it cost two-pence, was mauve in colour and was put on sale October 11th, 1949. The same design with a value of £2, printed in blue and Overprinted 'SPECIAL BOAT RUN' in red was released later. The total printing comprised 5.,000 - the reason for high value being charged for this item being a fee for specially chartering a boat in conjunction with carrying important letters to the mainland in time to catch the mail; in other words, after the normal boat had left. Printed by Bradbury Wilkinson in sheets of 60, it was listed and priced in the 'Rosen Local Catalogue' at £12 each, over 25 years ago. We have never ever seen this stamp before - very few George VI Locals were ever issued, mainly Herm and Lundy. We have secured a small quantity of this unusual £2 overprint 'SPECIAL BOAT RUN' Superb U/M - £5.00 Marginal Blocks of Four - £17.50 Printers Imprint Blocks of Four (only 2) - £50.00 Complete Sheet of 60 (only 1 available) - £225.00 (Subject Unsold - Whilst they last) Order Number: Shuna |
