2002 Queen's Jubilee Prestige Booklet
With Exclusive Single 2nd Class Wilding with Diagonal Watermark
Originally the Booklet Pane No. 4 contained the revisited and
revised Decimal 'Wildings' comprising 4 of each 1st and 2nd Class stamps in a
pane of 8 with a blank black label. This is evidenced by the Label on the
outside of the printer's packet and also in the Press Release by Royal Mail
stating that the face value was £1.84 for the Pane of 8 stamps, only
subsequently was it changed to include the 2nd Class stamp increasing the
Pane to 9 (instead of 8) to a new face value of £2.03. This surprise extra
stamp was printed at an angle resulting in this stamp only having a different
watermark position (diagonal) to the other stamps in the pane.
This is the first time for over 35 years that Royal Mail has printed stamps on
watermarked paper (clearly visible). This new "50" Watermark was
specially commissioned for the Queen's Jubilee. The Stanley Gibbons Catalogue
Editor has confirmed that it constitutes a different variation and will have a
separate listing the new GB Concise and QEII Specialised Catalogues.
Previously some exclusive stamps have appeared in Prestige Booklets and includes
the Machin £p Sideband (ex Wedgwood) and 10p Type II (ex Heritage). These
stamps are also listed in the Concise at £45 and £24 respectively. These two
booklets have sales figures of 501,000 and 347,000 approx. Today's quantities
sold of Prestige Booklets are considerably lower and the last few were only
around 130,000 copies (1998 Definitive Portrait, 1999 Profile on Print and 2000
Queen Mother).
This Wilding Pane is, therefore quite exceptional for all the reasons stated.
Many collectors will want the Complete Booklet and the separate Booklet Panes,
FDC collectors will absorb a large number as there are also many Royalty
programmes being promoted. The Royal Mail is only producing the Wilding
Se-Tenant Pane Official FDC with just the Block of 8 totally excluding "the
extra odd 2nd Class" stamp so very few FDC's will exist of this 'Diagonal
Watermark' variation. It is expected that many of the 2002 GB album supplements
may include a space for this stamp! Lighthouse have just confirmed it's
inclusion in next year's Supplement! Of course there are many Collectors of
previous Wildings who will want to add this stamp to their collection, perhaps
both mint and fine used!!!
Is this exciting "Diagonal 2nd Class" stamp going to be a modern
scarcity - well, we will just have to wait and see! Will there be enough to go
round?
We now offer a selection of Mint, Fine Used and FDC combinations (probably worth
tucking a few away).
